Copper plate engraving. Approx. 7. 5 x 4.5 cm in the plate. Nicholas Ridley (c. 1500–16 October 1555) was Bishop of London. During the English Reformation, he was burned at the stake among the Oxford Martyrs as part of the Marian Persecutions for his teachings and his support of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Days' Queen. Ridley is remembered saint on the anniversary of his execution in various Anglican Communion calendars. This portrait was executed perhaps prior to that date. NF.
